Description
The picture shows 5 people (including Joseph Shaw on the right) in the foreground standing over what seems to be an archeological site with multiple levels getting narrower and deeper as it was excavated. The material seems to be symmetrical stone blocks. The background shows an ocean indicating the positioning of this site on the coastline looking out at mountains. See all items with this value

Notes
Kommos is the site of an ongoing excavation of a Minoan settlement, which began in 1976, on a beach east of Matala and near the village of Pitsidia. Kommos was a Minoan harbor in early Minoan civilization times and is suggested to be a main point of entry for the Mesara Plain. Considering the most common mode of transportation in Crete, it is worth noting that this site might keep human record of trade routes and objects suggesting connectivity and movement brought with trade. The presence of Joe Shaw, the depth of the excavation, and the stone construction indicate that this site is Kommos rather than the later Eleutherna.
