"M. Fitch" may refer to Dr. Marc Fitch, a well-known British archaeologist associated with the British School at Athens, of which Hugh Sackett was the Assistant Director and Vice President. Marc Fitch donated the money to found the Fitch Laboratory at the BSA. The man appears to be standing below another opening in the cave system as indicated by the light entering the frame from the left side.
