Description

This image shows a unique angle of the Naxos Kouros, laying horizontally in a quarry on Naxos. The Kouros is fundamentally geometrical and was most likely not completed by the artisan that sculpted it, as evidenced by the extremely basic and simplistic indications of body parts.

Notes

The ancient Apollonas quarry on Naxos is where the Kouros was found. The Kouros itself is made from Naxian marble and is about 35 feet tall. It was originally thought to pay homage to the god Apollo but recent scholarship concludes it may represent Dionysus. Perhaps the block began to crack or split causing the artist to abandon it in the quarry.
