Notes
This aerial view of the straits that separate Euboea and mainland Greece showcase one of the most important Greek passes, especially significant during the Persian Wars. Thermopylae was an important defensive location because it was the pass that intruders, like the Persians, had to access to reach the Greek mainland. In 480 BCE, the Battle of Thermopylae took place here, where ultimately the Greeks lost, and the Persians were able to march their way to ransack Athens and other Greek cities.
