Notes
Lord Byron was an English poet who famously fought alongside the Greeks in their war of independence against the Ottoman Empire. He died in Missolonghi in 1824 in between violent sieges of the city. He is remembered within a memorial site and cemetery called the Garden of Heroes which also memorializes some organizers of the Greek forces as well as the thousands of civilians that were massacred by the Turks as they attempted to flee the city in 1826.
